Kids Sewing 101

Skill Level: Learn To Sew

This is the perfect class for kids who have never sewn before or who want to take their personal exploration of sewing to the next level. Students will learn how to use a sewing machine and utilize basic sewing techniques. They will learn to make buttonholes, measure, cut, sew, and iron seams, work with a pattern, and put in lining fabric. The first day of class students will work on a tote bag, and once the tote is complete will sew pajama bottoms. If time permits, students will also learn to make a zippered pouch.  Most students will complete 1 to 2 projects during the class. Each student will take away the skills needed to sew simple projects independently and with confidence. Kids ages 8-12 are welcome.

Supply List for Kids Sewing 101

Supply List: A basic kit including most of the necessary supplies is included in the class fee. Please see below for more details on what the student needs to bring to class.

Class Kit- from Modern Domestic (included in class fee)

  • 2 Muslin squares for practice with seaming, stitching, measuring and ironing
  • 7” zipper (you choose a color at Modern Domestic)
  • 1.5 yard of 1”twill tape (this will be natural colored- bring your own if you’d like a different color)
  • Coordinating thread (you choose a color at Modern Domestic)
  • Little Sleep Well Pajama Bottoms pattern
  • 1 yard 1” elastic

KIDS WILL NEED PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS:

Tote Bag Project:

  • Main fabric- medium weight woven cotton, such as quilter’s cotton or linen (no knit, silky, fuzzy, or corduroy fabrics, please): 5/8 yd
  • Lining fabric- select the same weight fabric as you selected above: 5/8 yd
  • 3 buttons, no more than 1” in diameter

Pajama Bottoms Project:

  • 2 1/3 yards fabric

Zipper Pouch Project (If time permits):

  • Main fabric- 2 pieces of 5.5”x 6.5”
  • Lining fabric- 2 pieces of 5.5”x 6.5”
  • Note: there should be enough fabric leftover from the tote bag if you choose to make a matching pouch. Please use the same weight fabric as the tote bag.
