You can be the first step in keeping your machine purring like a kitten. A well-maintained machine is much more fun to use than a fussy one. Here are our top tips to keep it running smoothly:
- Change your needle approximately every 4-6 hours of sewing.
- Use the right needle for the job. MD carries the full line of Schmetz machine needles and we are happy to help you choose the correct needle for the project you are working on.
- Use high quality thread. Cheap thread is no good for your beloved machine and as vintage and lovely as your Granny’s old thread is, it makes a far better vignette than stitches in your work. Invest a few extra dollars in something that will make your stitches as smooth as your fabric and keep that lint out of your machine’s mechanical functions. We recommend Mettler, Aurifil, Isacord and other high quality European brands for sewing machines and Maxi-Lock for sergers.
- Clean and oil that girl. She works hard for you! For good info on cleaning, come in and let us help you or check out this tutorial. It is recommended that you clean and oil your machine every 3-5 bobbins.
- Use the proper oil. Not just any oil will do for a BERNINA. The viscosity varies from machine to machine. Don’t head to the shop for your boyfriends bike oil, swing by and get the right oil for your sewing machine.
- Cover it when not in use. Dust from the air, small curious fingers and kitties all can create unfortunate mishaps around your machine when not in use. Eliminate these issues with a sewing machine cover.
- Service your machine annually.
